Welcome to my blog. I document my adventures in travel, style, and food. Hope you have a nice stay!
In 2018, our founder Gabriella Warren-Smith launched Cognitive Sensations as a public programme exploring the neurological impact of new technology. Featuring an exhibition, Augmented Reality app, sensory artwork commission and event series, the programme discussed issues around the physiological and psychological changes occurring in humans, as a result of digital technology engagement.
At this early stage of the project, we were fascinated by the huge impact of digital devices on everyday life. Drawing together perspectives of artists, neuroscientists, architects and digital theorists, we discussed a range of neurological topics such as generations, memory and attention. Through these dynamic conversations, our online blog was born, and a series of articles were published to showcase what we learnt and discovered.
The aim of this programme was not to establish a single perspective or theory, but rather to reflect how contentious the great digital debate is, particularly within neuroscience. Drawn into the hyperbolic but deeply fascinating perspectives of writers such as Susan Greenfield, Nicholas Carr and Jean M.Twenge, we quickly found ourselves amongst others also curious about the psychological impacts of our technological devices.
Read the articles which shaped our CIC, and unveil the research which underpinned the first steps of Cognitive Sensations’ journey.
A 3 minute video summarising the Cognitive Sensations public programme, hosted by FACT in Liverpool and THECUBE in London. Compromising of 5 events, we learnt about the neurological effects of the digital age and its relationship with artistic practice.
An insight into the research behind The ‘S’ Project, an artistic investigation of the relationship between physical and virtual experiences. Communicating between England and Canada, both artists share their experience as mothers in the digital age, commenting on the rather male centric design of their devices.
How does our consumer driven society influence digital design, and what psychological impact might it have upon users? Drawing from Nir Eyal’s customer engagement manual Hooked: How to build habit-forming products, Vanessa Bartlett explores the various triggers that interface designers deploy to render online environments more habit-forming.
PIBLIC PROGRAMME ESSAY #4
In the fourth event of the Cognitive Sensations programme, THECUBE became host to a conversation exploring the impact of the digital age on identity and health. This essay will explore the transformation of the self through an evaluation of current digital practices in relation to the body.
Time on Instagram is always presented as supplementary information. When an image or video is posted to the newsfeed or story section of an Instagram account, the pictorial and/or audiovisual content of the post is its primary tool for communication. This post is an exploration of the absence of time, and its impact on authenticity and transparence within Instagram.
PUBLIC PROGRAMME ESSAY #3
An essay exploring artistic practice investigating the impact of the digital age on perception. The narrative evolved from my observations of Cognitive Sensations, an event consisting of a series of presentations by a multi-disciplined panel, a participatory artwork called The Artist’s Presence (2018), and a Q&A session. This essay will seek to represent some of the issues we addressed, using examples of artistic practice to illustrate the conversations that artists can bring to the great debate surrounding screen culture.
Time, as we know it, can broadly be sub-divided into three states; physical time, biological time and psychological time. Historically humans have created different forms of systems to manage and divide time. This essay explores how the smartphone era has impacted these systems, and the human relationship with time.
PUBLIC PROGRAMME ESSAY #1
This essay will investigate how digital technology engagement affects the cognitive process of perception, employing the discourse explored in the opening panel discussion of Cognitive Sensations. In the debate, we discussed the influences of virtual reality and digital technology on the relationship between perception and the environment.
On the morning of the opening, we are getting very excited for our panel discussion exploring perception, and would like to share a promo video with you for Cognitive Sensations.
An introduction to the Cognitive Sensations public programme, investigating the neurological effects of the digital age. Featuring talks, artworks and debates, the programme will uncover several concepts exploring the physiological and psychological changes occurring in humans, as a result of their engagement with digital technology.
